Aspect mechanics, by pair

Synastry Pages: How Each Cross-Chart Pairing Is Computed

Each page below is one specific pairing this system checks between two birth charts: which angles count as an aspect, at what orbs, and what does or does not change how confidently the result is held.

This index does not compute anything for two specific people — for that, a full synastry reading compares all ten bodies between your two charts at once, not one pairing in isolation.

The short answer first

What is synastry?

Synastry is the comparison of two complete birth charts against each other, point by point, instead of matching two people by sun sign. Each chart is computed on its own from that person's birth date, time, and place, and neither is averaged into a third chart.

The comparison asks two questions of the pair. First the angle: more than 60 point-pairings between the two charts are tested against five fixed angles — conjunction, opposition, square, trine, and sextile — each with its own margin, or orb, being conjunction and opposition at 6°, square and trine at 5°, and sextile at 3°. Pairings where both points are slow outer planets — Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto to one another — are skipped: those sit at the same angle for everyone born in the same years, so they describe a generation rather than this pair. Second the house: which of the twelve houses of one person's chart a planet of the other's falls into, a step that needs an exact, known birth time for the chart being landed in.
